About Chiropractic

How does Chiropractic work ?

Our chiropractors perform adjustments to the spine and other parts of the body with the goal of
correcting alignment, easing pain, and supporting the body’s ability to heal itself.

Chiropractic care is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism controlled by the brain, spinal cord and nerves of the body.

The nervous system is protected by the spinal vertebrae. When these vertebrae become misaligned or lose normal motion, malfunction of the tissues and organs throughout the body result.

Every day we are helping patients find relief from:

  • Headaches
  • Joint pain
  • Neck pain
  • Low back pain
  • Sciatica

We are also experienced at treating Northwest Indiana patients with:

  • Frozen shoulder
  • Knee pain
  • Neuropathy
  • Symptoms of pregnancy

Chiropractic helps to remove postural imbalances and structural misalignments that can accumulate in our bodies over time.

Chiropractic works by restoring your own inborn ability to be healthy in three ways:

  1. For your body to remain healthy, your nervous system must function well.
  2. For your nervous system to function well it must be free of interference.
  3. By restoring spinal function with Chiropractic adjustments, nerve interference by misaligned vertebrae is removed, thus allowing optimal nervous system function and improved health.

Our goal for every patient is to provide customized care to restore the integrity of your nervous system and get rid of pain quickly.

We help patients improve their posture, muscle balance and mobility so that they can get back to feeling good today.

Chiropractic is a form of natural health care that focuses on treating a patient without the use of drugs or medicines.

The main causes of joint dysfunction are mechanical, chemical, and emotional.

  1. Mechanical causes are referred to as micro- or macrotrauma. Both forms of mechanical causes of joint dysfunction can benefit immensely from chiropractic care.
    • Microtrauma can also be called repetitive stress injury. Sitting with poor posture at a desk and typing all day can cause problems such as carpal tunnel, neck, upper back, or low back pain.
    • Macrotrauma refers to pain due to trauma to the body, such as a fall, a break, or a car crash.
  2. Another cause of joint dysfunction is due to the chemical effects on the joint function and the body as a whole. Smoking, heavy drinking, and poor diet can create chemical imbalances in the body.
  3. Emotional stress also leads to joint dysfunction due to the overall stress and tension created within the body.

Will A Chiropractic Adjustment Hurt?

In general, a chiropractic adjustment does not cause any pain. You may feel sore as you begin to reactivate the proper muscles for posture and support. This is normal and will often feel like post-gym soreness.

Your Spine Degenerates in Phases:

Degeneration Phase 1

First your spine loses its normal balance. There may be a loss of normal spinal curves. Your nerves may be affected and the vital life energy that flows over them is interfered with. Also your joints, discs, nerves and posture are stressed and age more quickly. Surprisingly, there may be no pain other than occasional minor discomfort. Also present may be a slight lessening of energy and slight height loss. Response to spinal care at this phase is generally good.

Degeneration Phase 2

Here there is a much greater degree of decay, disc narrowing and bone spurs (deformations); postural changes are much worse. This condition is very common (by age 40, 80% of males and 76% of females exhibit moderate disc degeneration). Spinal canal narrowing or stenosis may occur. This phase is characterized by more common aches and pains, fatigue, and a diminished ability to cope with stress. Height continues to decrease. With chiropractic care at this phase significant improvement is possible.

Degeneration Phase 3

Here there are more postural imbalances, increased nerve damage, permanent scar tissue and advanced bone deformation. Physical and/or mental weakness or disability begin. Also found in this phase are permanent loss of height and loss of energy. With chiropractic care at this phase some reversal is possible.

Degeneration Phase 4

This is the most advanced stage of subluxation degeneration. The postural imbalance is severe and motion is limited. There is severe nerve damage, permanent scar tissue is formed and the bones may begin to fuse. In this phase we find pain, various degrees of physical or mental disability, and continued loss of energy and height. By now the condition is considered irreversible, although chiropractic may give some symptomatic relief.

What Is Subluxation Subluxation is like a fuse box.

Power comes from the power company to the fuse box in your home. Then, power goes to different parts of your home like the family room, basement, kitchen, and more. If you overload one area, you trip a breaker and have to reset the switch to restore the power.

Think of NIPSCO as your brain, and the fuse box is your spine. Information is sent from your brain to all parts of your body. A subluxation occurs when you overload an area, much like a fuse box. But, instead of the body shutting off power completely, it slows it down a lot, and stays like that until the subluxation gets removed and increases the flow of information from brain to body.

If you are looking for a professional establishment that treats and cares for you like family, Porterfield Family Chiropractic is the answer. Dr. Porterfield is personable and an absolute pro at what he does. His staff that I have interacted with especially Rachele and Melissa, are phenomenal. I need to give them a shout out with scheduling and making Porterfield Family Chiropractic a great place to go for treatment. From the bottom of my heart (and entire back) thank you.

The staff here is so friendly and helped me from the moment I called looking for more information. My first appointment was spent discussing how I feel, where my issues were and symptoms I had been having…from that moment I knew that I had found the right place. They genuinely care about their patients and getting us to feel better.

I started seeing Dr. Porterfield during my second trimester of pregnancy. He helped me feel comfortable throughout my entire pregnancy – I didn’t have any of the back pains or “common” discomforts that I had while pregnant with my first. Honestly, it was a night & day difference. My labor was only 5 hours which I definitely attribute to being properly aligned. Dr. Porterfield is not only an awesome Chiropractor but also a great teacher who keeps you informed every step of the way. By far this was the best decision I made in terms of prenatal care.
